The School Buzz: Woodland Park first-graders thrive with annual ‘living wax museum’

First-graders at Gateway Elementary School are learning about history’s most famous people by becoming them.

It's a living wax museum, an annual project for the Woodland Park first-grade class led by Brandy Havens and Jessica Stickley.

Students and their families picked famous people to learn about. The kids had to research the person, write about them, complete a poster, and costume and then present their biography.

Havens says the first graders “thrive” from projects like this.

"The Wax Museum is a way for ALL students to take research to a different level.  Usually, this is done with the intermediate grades; however, we have found success with it in First Grade the past two years," she said.

Stickley said, “every single one of them blew it out of the water."

"The Wax Museum project is hands-on learning that allows all students to shine. This project covers so many learning components and standards. What  I love most about projects such as this is that all of the students rose to the challenge," she said.
