The School Buzz: Mesa Ridge HS grad hopes to build up community, leaves with real construction experience

While some students excel in uniforms or lab coats, some are proving to jumpstart a career simply by picking up a hammer.

Jace Leimkuhl graduated from Mesa Ridge High School on Monday. And he leaves with real-world experience in construction that could propel him into a successful career quickly.

The graduating senior already has an internship with GE Johnson this summer. Part of his success stems from a neat program he took advantage of called the MILL (Manufacturing Industry Learning Lab), a vocational education campus of which the Widefield and Peyton school districts offer. It was through the MILL where Jace helped build a 1,200 square foot house with fellow students and other industry professionals with the Home Builders Institute.

Jace also served as the MILL Skills USA Chapter president for Widefield D-3. He even won the state championship in the Skills USA Plumbing competition two years ago.

Jace hopes to return some day to the MILL as an industry pro and give back to the program that has helped him so much.
