Driver ejected from car as it rolls 500 feet down a Colorado Springs mountain
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)-- A man is now in critical condition in a Colorado Springs hospital, after he was ejected from a car as it rolled approximately 500 feet down a mountain in Colorado Springs.
According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD), they received a call for service from a witness at around 1:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon on Gold Camp Road at Point Sublime. Colorado State Patrol (CSP), got the call to provide additional support at around 1:30.
CSFD says it took a little over two hours for the rescue team to bring the injured driver from the embankment back up to Gold Camp Road where he could receive medical attention.
The male driver of the car was driven by first responders to a safer location further down Gold Camp Road, where a UCHealth LifeLine helicopter transported him to a hospital in the area. CSFD does not know at this time, which hospital he was taken to, or his current condition.
CSP believes the man was the sole occupant in the car, and he was still alive when he was found by first responders.
Though CSP initially responded to the incident, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has since taken over the investigation.
CSPD closed the road at around 4:00 P.M. According to police stationed on Gold Camp Road, they're currently extracting the vehicle, and the road will remain closed until that process is complete.
The stretch of road where the accident happened does not have guard rails. But, a CSP trooper told KRDO that the incident doesn’t appear to have been a result of road conditions. The trooper added it’s too early on in the investigation to determine the cause.
This is a developing story. KRDO has a crew at the scene gathering more information.
