Colorado Springs gears up for winter in September

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Coming off a record high weekend with temperatures in the 90s, the weather is about to pull a 180 as residents here in Colorado Springs prepare for the drastic cold drop.

Richard JeanBlanc said, “Looking forward to it, I hope we get at least a foot. That would be nice.”

While Ondre Barker added, “I’m not upset, but I’m worried about my plants, that kind of thing. So I’ve got some work today.”

With snow in the forecast, crews are gearing up earlier than expected.

Michelle Peulen, CDOT Spokesperson said, “In Colorado, we know we should expect the unexpected, and so CDOT is prepared for whatever mother nature throws at us whether it be a red-flag warning, high winds, heavy rain or snow in September.”

But crews are hoping the roads won’t get that bad due to how warm it has been.

“Especially with it being in the 90s [Monday], pavement temperatures are going to be very warm, so we anticipate that snow to start melting right away. So basically, what we are going to be watching for is more slush than heavy snow accumulation on the roadway,” said Peulen.

And even though you might not have been planning on doing any winter preps on Labor Day, it might be a good day to make sure you bring in your plants, turn your sprinklers off, and protect your outside faucets.

Lyle Fair, a landscaper said, “Get a towel, a blanket, really anything, and put it over the device. Get a plastic bag to basically hold the towel in place. Get a zip tie and you'll be fine with just that step."

So, enjoy the 90 degrees today and prep where you need to because the cold front looks to move in by Monday night and carry through Wednesday.
