Comeback Yoga offering free classes for the military community across Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Veterans in the Pikes Peak region are encouraged to take advantage of free yoga classes aimed at helping them mentally and physically.
Comeback Yoga is a Denver-based non-profit that offers classes at military bases and offices in Colorado, Utah, and Hawaii.
The classes teach trauma-informed yoga, which is designed to calm down the nervous system.
"Trauma-informed yoga is a way of being very mindful of what the military community has been through," said Janin Reed, an instructor at Victory Service Dogs.
Classes are now offered every Friday at 10 a.m. at Victory Service Dogs in Colorado Springs.
Last Friday, Tom Noonan took his first class.
"It’s good to be out of the house and around people, and fellow veterans. It’s a nice pace, it’s a slow movement, so it’s not jarring my body at all so that’s good for me," explained Noonan.
The non-profit says instructors are specially trained in military culture and know how to deal with traumatic brain injuries, military sexual trauma, and accessible yoga. The class is also designed to give members of the military community the tools to deal with depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
"We approach through mindful language, mindful movement, and also allowing the nervous system to calm down a little bit to give them tools for breath, to connect the breath with the movement and body," said Reed.
Noonan said yoga helps him physically, mentally, and psychologically.
"I think with PTSD you’re hyper-vigilant a lot of times when you don’t really need to be, and so it's a way to teach us how to relax and use it after the class," said Noonan.
Comeback Yoga also offers classes at Fort Carson, the Air Force Academy, and online.
