Lincoln County deputy released from hospital after ambush

KRDO

DENVER (KRDO) -- Lincoln County Deputy Michael Hutton will finally be going home Tuesday after being shot in an ambush last week while responding to a theft.

Hutton was taken to Swedish Medical Center and treated for multiple gunshot wounds he sustained during a shootout with a theft suspect on Highway 40 outside of Limon.

It started with a report from a semi-truck driver that someone was stealing merchandise out of the back of his truck. Hutton responded, but within seconds of getting out of his patrol car, he was "met with a hail of gunfire," according to Capt. Michael Yowell.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Hutton was able to get himself out of the line of fire during the attack. Since the ambush, Hutton has undergone "several surgeries" during his time at the hospital.

The suspect in the shooting was found dead in a field a thousand yards away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
