Colorado Springs police conduct street racing enforcement operations

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reports that since April, they have conducted eight targeted street racing enforcement operations at locations across the city.

CSPD says these operations have included additional patrol enforcement on the weekends. According to CSPD, the latest operation was conducted on Aug. 7 alongside the Colorado State Patrol.

Police say the operation resulted in 30 takeover or street racing-related violations as well as two separate eluding incidents that resulted in five felony arrests. On top of that, CSPD confirms that three minors were issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor during the operation.

Altogether, police say the operations have resulted in over 140 racer-related summonses, three felony eluding cases, one felony warrant arrest, 43 trespass summonses, numerous warnings and contacts, and the disruption of organized racing events before they could escalate.

"We understand the frustration these incidents cause," said Chief Vasquez. "Residents deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods and on our roadways. We share those concerns and remain committed to addressing this dangerous behavior."

CSPD says that enforcement on racing events remains challenging as gatherings develop fast and relocate quickly, usually dispersing before officers can safely respond.

"While officers may not be able to respond to every reported incident due to competing emergency calls, staffing limitations and the often-short duration of these events, every report is important," said Deputy Chief Doug Trainer. "Those reports help identify patterns and direct future enforcement efforts."
