Friends, family demand answers after deadly officer-involved shooting in Cañon City

CAÑON CITY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The friends and family of Dalton Buckholz and Kriton Phillips are demanding answers from the Cañon City Police Department after officers fired at the two men in a hotel parking lot, killing Buckholz and injuring Phillips.

Witnesses from the shooting, which happened in the parking lot of the Quality Inn & Suites in Canon City on May 1st, said it wasn't initially clear that people firing were police. They said the police officers were in plain clothes and were driving an unmarked car.

A close friend of Philips, who did not want to be named, said that she didn't believe either man owned a gun or had any weapons with them at the time of the shooting. She said Phillips had only left home half an hour before she got a call that the two had been shot. She said she didn't believe it at first, so she went to the scene of the shooting to see for herself. She said she still doesn't understand why police would be firing at the two men.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is taking the lead on this investigation. KRDO reached out to the CBI to get more information about what happened, we have not heard back.
