Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper pleads not guilty to updated domestic violence charges, faces trial in November

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper has pleaded not guilty to charges related to an incident involving his girlfriend, according to our Denver news partners.

According to our news partners, Cooper pleaded not guilty back in June to a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge related to an incident in early June that was deemed domestic violence at the time.

Cooper and the woman were arrested in June on domestic violence charges stemming from an incident over cheating allegations, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by 9News. A protection order was also placed against Cooper from contacting his girlfriend.

The affidavit claimed Cooper grabbed the woman's arm and took back his phone, and at some point during the altercation "braced his neck against [her] neck to prevent her from getting his phone," the affidavit reads.

Cooper had been released on a $5,000 recognizance bond before allegedly sending the woman several texts and going to her home, violating a court order, a few days after his first arrest, according to our Denver news partners.

Cooper's girlfriend at the time had also been charged with criminal mischief, but a judge dropped the charges against her in July, according to 9News.

After Cooper had pled not guilty to the initial charges, the Parker Police Department filed additional charges after investigators obtained medical records that claimed the woman had suffered "serious bodily injury," according to 9News. He is facing the following charges, according to our Denver news partners:

  • Second-degree assault -- strangualtion
  • Third-degree assault -- knowingly or recklessly causing injury
  • Criminal mischief -- $300-$1,000
  • Violating a protection order
  • Harassment -- repeated telephone calls

Cooper has been an active participant at Broncos' training camp, but was placed on the NFL commissioner's exempt list, which allows him temporary paid leave from active play, according to 9News.

Our Denver news partners report Cooper will be in court for trial Nov. 10-13, with a break on Nov. 11 for Veterans' Day for the five charges he now faces.
