Jonathon Cooper returns to Broncos Training Camp while legal process continues

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KRDO) — As excitement builds around the start of Denver Broncos training camp, one significant question continues to linger off the field: What comes next for outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper?

Cooper returned to practice Wednesday after being excused from the team's mandatory minicamp in June following his two arrests. While his return marks a step forward, uncertainty remains regarding any potential discipline from the NFL and the outcome of his ongoing legal proceedings.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed Cooper's situation multiple times during his media availability but declined to speculate on what could happen moving forward.

"We're supportive, and yet, very much aware of the seriousness of these type of things," Payton said.

Payton also emphasized that the organization is waiting for the legal and league processes to play out before discussing potential outcomes.

"When it's finally finished, we'll all have a better feel. It's unfair for me to answer any of those questions right now," Payton said.

According to reports, Cooper has spent the past several weeks meeting with team leadership and completing inpatient counseling and therapy.

Payton praised the effort Cooper has made during that time away from the team.

"We're proud of the work he did these last, call it a month and a half. Wasn't easy. And it'll continue to be a challenge," Payton said.

Despite Cooper's return to the field, the possibility of discipline from the league remains. Under the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy, players can face suspension depending on the circumstances and findings of an investigation.

The NFL's review of Cooper's case is still ongoing, and no decision has been announced. Until either the league or the legal system reaches a conclusion, the Broncos have largely remained tight-lipped about Cooper's long-term status.

Cooper's next court appearance, his arraignment, is scheduled for August 31.

For now, one thing is clear: Cooper will be a full participant as Broncos training camp gets underway. What remains unclear is whether the legal process or a future NFL ruling could impact his availability later this season.
