El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announces passing of K9 Mako
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) announces the passing of K9 Mako, a 5-year-old German Shepherd.
EPSO says K9 Mako passed on Aug. 12 after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. According to EPSO, K9 Mako was medically retired after the diagnosis, giving him the chance to stay home with his handler, Deputy D. Richardson, and his family.
According to officials, his final days were filled with treats, belly rubs, and time with those who loved him.
K9 Mako became part of the EPSO team in July 2025 after having a career with the Fountain Police Department from April 2023 through May 2025, says EPSO.

K9 Mako assisted with 19 drug searches and contributed to the seizure of more than one pound of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. He also helped secure two peaceful surrenders, participated in a large-scale field search, and performed duties assigned to the Specialized Patrol Unit, says EPSO.

According to officials, during his time at Fountain Police Department, he was deployed 85 times for narcotics detection, which resulted in n 71 seizures and 42 arrests, including the recovery of approximately 187 grams of methamphetamine, 25 fentanyl pills, 7 grams of cocaine, and 1 gram of heroin.
“Mako was an exceptional K9 and a valued member of our Sheriff’s Office family,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “Although his time with our agency was far too short, he made an impact through his service, his dedication, and his partnership with Deputy Richardson."
During his time off, EPSO says K9 Mako enjoyed napping and chasing his favorite ball.
