40 years later, the search for missing Colorado Springs boy continues

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Forty years ago, seven-month-old Christopher Abeyta was taken from his parents' bedroom on the night of July 15, 1986.

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is still investigating the disappearance to this day. Officials say the case remains open, and detectives continue to review all credible tips brought into the department.

CSPD says no lead has resulted in locating Christopher or identifying a suspect.

Officials say a recent review of the case by a cold case detective has identified additional investigative avenues that are being pursued. The original investigation found the home garage door opener was missing, and a basement window had been opened, according to the cold case file from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

According to CSPD, the investigation has generated around 5,000 pages of case files and detectives have conducted hundreds of interviews. It also included investigating across multiple states and CSPD has worked with other departments, including CBI and the FBI.

A photo released last year from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children showed what a 39-year-old Christopher would look like today.

KRDO13 spoke with the Abeyta family last year about their continued mission to search for their brother. They said at the time, new images helped create another way to find their sibling.

More information and updates on Christopher can be found on the Facebook page run by the family. CSPD asks for anyone with information to reach out.
