Humane Society opens shelter for pets displaced by ‘Aspen Acres’ fire

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is stepping up to help pets displaced by the "Aspen Acres" fire by providing a shelter at Pueblo County Parks and Recreation for evacuees' small animals.

In the latest update from the Humane Society, about 180 dogs and cats are being housed at the recreation center. The Humane Society tells KRDO13 that its ultimate goal is to provide the best possible care for pets.

“It’s really hard to see community members that have been affected by this fire, but it’s really impactful, and it’s powerful to be a part of an organization that offers a safe place for pets,” said Lindsay Vigna, Assistant Director of Animal Law Enforcement for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

The shelter is right down the road from the Pueblo Evacuation Center, giving evacuees the chance to spend time with their pets.

Vigna encourages pet owners to always have an evacuation plan in place for their pets.

“Let this be a reminder to always have a plan in place, especially for your pets, because they are our family members," Vigna said. "And so having a disaster preparedness kit handy for yourselves and your pets is really a good idea.”

Experts tell KRDO13 that evacuation kits for animals should contain any medication, special food and items your pet might be attached to.

“All of that is really, really critical, especially when there’s such a stressful situation in front of them,” Vigna said.

Officials say stray animals should be brought to the Humane Society’s Pueblo Campus, which is also designated as a reunification site. The Humane Society is also assisting with housing livestock and larger animals at the Colorado State Fairgrounds.
