Pikes Peak to host first-ever sunset opening on Fourth of July

Pikes Peak -- America's Mountain

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Pikes Peak is holding its first-ever sunset opening time on the Fourth of July.

This year marks Colorado's 150th anniversary, as well as the United States' 250th anniversary.

According to the City of Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Highway Gateway will open at 4 a.m. for the sunrise event and close at 6 a.m., before reopening at 7 p.m. for the sunset event.

Other sunrise openings will be available throughout the summer. Timed-entry permits and admission must be purchased in advance, says city officials.

The summit is also featuring a special exhibit where visitors can see the original Lt. Zebulon Montgomery Pike notebook from his discovery of the mountain. The notebook, along with other artifacts, will be on display through Aug. 10.
