Original Romeo and Juliet adaptation coming to Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Theatreworks in Colorado Springs is debuting a new Romeo and Juliet story. It still takes place in Verona, but 500 years later, during the height of World War II.

Theatreworks artistic director Max Shulman said the idea sparked after he found out Verona was bombed during WWII. He said it was an opportunity to tell Romeo and Juliet's story through a faster-paced, war-torn environment.

I thought by setting it there, I get to up the temperature, up the pressure that is working on these young people as they try to find a way forward, as they fall in love and try to seek a future," Theatreworks artistic director Max Shulman said.

Opening night is Thursday, April 9. The show has a four-week runtime with performances every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until May 3.
