Dog injured after owner says they were attacked by two other dogs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado Springs man says his dog was injured after he claims they were attacked by two other dogs on the Columbine Trail in Cheyenne Canyon.
Colin McAfee was enjoying a day outdoors with his family on Saturday, Feb. 21. He decided to take a run on the Columbine Trail with his Pitbull-Lab mix, Nellie. That's when McAfee says he came across two people with their own large dogs. He says those dogs pulled their owners to the ground as they attacked him and Nellie.
"I was terrified," McAfee says. "Immediately, within seconds, the trail has snow on it, so the trail is covered in blood."
McAfee says he had almost no time to react as two large white dogs attacked him and Nellie, less than a half-mile from the Starsmore Visitor Center in Cheyenne Canyon.
"I was literally holding the dog above me as he was going after my head," McAfee says. "The man of that group had to pull the dog off of me."
McAfee got away with a few scrapes, but Nellie was muzzled and couldn't defend herself. She suffered significant injuries and was rushed to animal emergency care.
"Nellie got bit a few times pretty bad [and] had [to] have a handful of stitches in three different areas. Had to have a tube placed there to drain out some...fluid that had built up underneath one of her bite marks."
Nellie is feeling better now, but the other owners left the scene with their dogs. McAfee says he's still concerned for the safety of his kids, who spend a lot of time in Cheyenne Canyon.
"I have two little girls. I have a lot of friends that live in, you know, the Broadmoor - Cheyenne Canyon area. The idea of those dogs being out there is very scary."
McAfee says he filed an online report with the Colorado Springs Police about the incident.
