CSPD honors citizens and officers at annual award ceremony
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - We often just see the headlines when a crime happens, an arrest is made, and people move on.
On Wednesday night, the Colorado Springs Police Department shined a light on regular people who step up in the most difficult situations.
Every person who took the stage chose to live their lives selflessly. And in the crowd, were their families rooting for them.
Among the honorees were a group of veterinarians who performed emergency surgery on K9 Roam.
"We just feel so fortunate that we were able to be there," says Dr. Michelle Morgan. "He is truly one of the most amazing dogs. To go through such a trauma at the hands of another person. He truly loves every person he meets."
She says the award is the community's, just as much as it is hers.
"We had people from all over the state helping us to save his life. So it was just it was just an amazing thing to see so many people come together," says Morgan.
To this day, Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez is amazed by the vets notable work.
"Every one of these awards really are fantastic, but I just happen to remember going to the veterinary clinic there on North Nevada, seeing the status that roam was in, and just watching those vets. It was really a dramatic day that really still in my memory, its just fantastic," says Chief Vasquez.
Among others awarded were Omar Campos, a man who reported the suspicious behavior of a man and a child. After investigating, it turned out the child was lured and abducted by the man before Campos stepped in.
Officer Katlyn Delgado, Officer Edgar Toscano, and Officer Alexander Stevens were awarded the Life Saving Award for swift actions to prevent further tragedy during a critical incident.
Officer of the Year was awarded to Officer Zachary Forrester for leading by example. In March of 2025, Officer Forrester arrived on scene to an officer-involved shooting and convinced the suspect to surrender peacefully without further incident. Just one example of his bravery.
