In light of Charlie Kirk shooting, are political figures concerned for their own safety?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The assassination of Charlie Kirk has put a spotlight on what it means to be in the public eye, and the risk that comes along with it.

Kirk's death, an assassination in Minnesota, an alleged attempt on the Pennsylvania governor's life, as well as the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump, have reminded those running for office that a level of exposure can sometimes be dangerous.

Kirk was supposed to be in Woodland Park on Thursday, speaking at Charis Bible College. Instead, leaders are gathering in his remembrance.

Some leaders say it's a reminder to push forward, while others are prioritizing their safety.

Jessica Killin, who is running against Representative Jeff Crank for Colorado's 5th Congressional District, says she will continue to be vocal on the campaign trail and that differences in opinion shouldn't mean death.

"We are all Americans. I didn't agree with what Charlie Kirk stood for, but I know he was somebody who cared deeply for his country; he's a patriot, I'm a patriot," she said. "We both want a better America for our kids. We just disagreed on how to go about doing that, and that means we need to be able to be in an environment where we can talk about these things openly."

South Carolina's Representative Nancy Mace recently told reporters that she won't be doing any outdoor events anytime soon.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson told CNN on Thursday that several lawmakers have approached him about upping their protection. Following an attack on Minnesota leaders, lawmakers approved funding to provide themselves with home security measures. Johnson told CNN that roughly 60 Democrats and 20 Republicans used that program.

Greg Lopez, who is running for Colorado's governor seat, says being in the public eye is a gamble. He says he will continue to be cautious and more aware of his surroundings, but he doesn't intend to change his strategy.
