Rockslide behind Manitou Springs business crushed their cars, but not their spirit

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Rain and an ensuing rockslide tumbled down onto cars in Manitou Springs, but one car owner says she didn't let it dampen her sunshine.

Wednesday's rockslide took place in the 100 block of Lovers Lane, which was still closed as of Thursday evening.

"Due to the upcoming rain and the rain that we've had. We want to make sure it's going to be a safe area for people to park and or walk," said Cassandra Hessel, a spokesperson with the City of Manitou Springs.

Unfortunately for Cassandra Matheny, the rockslide totaled her parked car. However, she wasn't scared to make light of the ordeal. She grabbed a broken piece of her bumper as a memento; a cartoon picture of the car is now scribbled on top, along with witness signatures and the heading "The crash of 2025." The bumper now has a rightful home hanging in the entryway above her kitchen.

But there's no doubt the situation rattled Matheny, who said the now-totaled car was the nicest she's ever owned. She said she was just moments away from hopping inside when the rockslide came crashing down.

"I came walking to the back and, and obviously, shocked-- Just what? This isn't real. There's no way. I was just about to get in the car," she said.

Thankfully, no one was injured in this case.

The Loft, a nearby coffee and bagel shop, hung a closed sign and ode to Fleetwood Mac in their window. "Well, the landslide brought us down," it read.

Employees of The Loft tell KRDO13 that they had never considered that the rocks near the parking lot would be a risk. The business says they plan to open to customers tomorrow.
