Both directions of I-25 reopened near Fountain after a crash shut the roadway down for 11 hours
EL PASO COUNTY, Co. (KRDO) -- A crash involving a double-decker car carrier and a pickup truck closed down both northbound and southbound lanes of I-25 near Fountain on Monday night, March 4.
The truck appeared to be carrying several brand new Tesla Cybertrucks with a base value around $60,000.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the car carrier was traveling northbound on I-25 when it collided with the barrier on the right side of the road. The driver then overcorrected causing the car carrier to swerve and collide with the barrier separating the north and southbound lanes.
The car carrier crossed over to the southbound lanes hitting a Ford F-350 headed southbound. The car carrier then rolled over on its side hitting a Chevy Silverado causing serious injuries to the 44-year-old driver.
The Fountain Fire Department reported a total of 6-7 vehicles involved in the accident. Two people in those vehicles required extrication from their vehicle, including the driver transported with serious injuries.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, I-25 was closed between Mesa Ridge Parkway and South Academy Boulevard for 11 hours while crews cleared the wreckage. The roadway has since reopened.
The crash is under investigation but at this point speed, alcohol, and drugs have been ruled out as being factors.
The transport company, CRC Trans Logistics LLC, contacted KRDO two days later to share their driver's version of what happened.
Vladimir Voronin said in a statement that he ran over some debris in the construction zone and blew a tire.
The statement included a photo of the tire supposedly damaged by the debris.
"The right tire was ok, the left tire was blown up. I think the road debris caused the tire to blew up after which I lost control of the truck," said Voronin in the statement.
The state patrol has yet to clarify whether the driver of the semi will face any citations.
