Colorado Springs family asks community for help after 4-month-old diagnosed with rare cancer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 4-month-old Colorado Springs baby boy is back at home today, but still battling a rare form of cancer. And now his parents are scrambling to figure out how to cover the unexpected medical costs.  After being hospitalized for 15 days 4-month Leo Boyne is back in Colorado Springs with his family.

Little Leo is battling Neuroblastoma, a cancer that is found in fewer than 20-thousand Americans every year. Two days before Christmas Christopher and Chelsea Boyne took 4-month-old Leo for his regular check up appointment. On the drive home they received a devastating call from doctors.

"And they just said… he has cancer … There is masses growing on his liver, it's cancer. We don't know what it looks like, we don't know what his outcome is going to be … we need to do a CT scan," said Leo's mom Chelsea.

And after several scans, blood work and heart tests, doctors diagnosed Leo with Neurblastoma. The rare form of cancer can develop in the kidneys, stomach and bones.

Doctor performed surgery to remove Leo's cancerous mass at Children's Hospital in Aurora.

"We stayed in the hospital, he kind of went down hill from there after that, he had a lot of fluid built up, his blood pressure spiked. It went through the roof just because the mass was pressing on his kidneys and it's making it hard for his body to function," added Chelsea.

Since surgery, Leo has gone through three days of chemotherapy and has underwent two blood transfusions.

"I mean it's devastating, all you can think is just … my baby… I mean my baby is 4 months old like he doesn't deserve any of this… you instantly think the worse," said Chelsea.

Doctors are starting Leo on a new phase of chemotherapy next week, and his parents are trying to figure out how to pay for the unexpected medical bills.

"We haven't even seen the hospital bill for children's, we have gotten like the first two days and it's pretty terrifying and that's not even all the specialist and test," said Chris.

The family is asking for donations to help pay for Leo's medical bills.
