Juveniles arrested after mother, child killed in apartment fire in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KRDO) -- Two juvenile boys were arrested on Sunday in connection to the apartment fire that left a mother and her daughter dead, according to Lakewood Police Department.

The suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and first-degree arson. Lakewood Police identified the victims to be Kathleen Payton, 31, and her daughter 10-year-old Jazmine Payton-Aguayo.

On Oct. 31, Lakewood Police Department and West Metro Fire Rescue responded to the Tiffany Square Apartments at 935 Sheridan Blvd. at 4:15 a.m. for a report of a large structure fire.

According to the police, at least 14 of the 32 apartment units were damaged in the fire, leaving all residents displaced.

During the investigation, two residents were found dead inside one of the apartments.

A total of 10 people were injured in the fire. Seven people, including a firefighter, received treatment.
