Colorado Springs celebrates reopening of Acacia Park playground

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. (KRDO)-- Colorado Springs residents are now able to attend the new Acacia Park located on 115 E Platte Avenue. The playground was funded thanks to voters approval on the ballot issue 2B which was in the 2019 November ballot.

"We wanted to take the old playground out, it was unsafe, not great for the downtown environment," said Construction Manager, Jacob Butterfield.

The construction for the new Acacia Park started in 2021.

"We wanted to give something different, something artful," Butterfield said.

City leaders wanted to replace their old playground with a more modern one.

"Which allows all different ages to play together", said Director of Parks and Rec, Britt Hayley.

Now the new structure located in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs gives kids the opportunity to use all their senses and includes an artistic ninja warrior-like climbing structure, a tot lot with colorful rubberized features, a slide, and a spinner.

Parents are excited there's a new place for children to enjoy.

"This looks like something kids can experiment on and be creative with and be a little higher above ground than I'm comfortable with but maybe that's good for them to just kind of feel that excitement," said Colorado Springs parent, Josh Mahoney.

And the best part of the playground is it is accessible for all kids, as it is handicap accessible and only the 4th in the world to be built.

"To have something like this where every kids feels welcome and encouraged to play and interact I think that that is really beautiful," added Colorado Springs parent, Melissa Mahoney.

New trees and landscaping around the park were also added. The renovations were funded thanks to voters ' approval of ballot issue 2B in 2019 which allowed the city to keep  excess tabor revenue from the year before.
