Colorado Springs community comes together for the annual ‘Walk to End Alzheimer’s’ event
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Saturday morning is the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's event at Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs.
The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest fundraiser for Alzheimer's care, support and research. The Association's goal is to raise awareness and funds to help put a stop to Alzheimer's.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the promise flower ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by the walk.
Kids and well-behaved dogs are welcome to walk, but must be on a leash at all times.
There is no registration fee for the walk. However, participants are asked to make a personal donation to the Alzheimer's Association. All funds raised further the care, support and advance research efforts toward methods of prevention, treatment, and ultimately, a cure.
At the event, an estimated 2,000 people were in attendance and $192,000 raised.
According to the Alzheimer's Association, over 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's and one in three seniors die with Alzheimer's or another dementia. Which is more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
Each registered participant receives a promise garden flower. With a flower color that best represents their connection to the disease.
Blue represents living with Alzheimer's or another dementia. Purple is for those who have lost someone to the disease. Yellow represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for a person living with Alzheimer's. Lastly, orange is for those who support the case and the Association's vision of a world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
Visit the Alzheimer's Association website to donate, advocate, volunteer, or get involved. The fundraising target is $235,000. Anyone can contribute to the walk through the end of the year.
