Colorado Springs Little League Challenger Division offers baseball program designed for disabled community

MGN

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Little League has a unique division that allows members of the disabled community to play baseball.

The Challenger Division's mission is to "provide an opportunity for individuals with intellectual and physical challenges to enjoy the benefits of Little League participation in an environment structured to their abilities."

Individuals ages 4 - 18 can participate in the Little League Challenger Division, while individuals ages 15 and above can participate in the Senior League Challenger Division. There is no maximum age in the Senior League.

The Challenger leagues play games every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. from Aug. 7 through Sept. 35 at Goose Gossage Youth Sports Complex, located at 3950 Mark Dabling Blvd. in Colorado Springs.

According to the league, each Challenger player is paired with a partner for the entirety of the game, which gives parents the chance to watch their children play and cheer them on.

"This league provides my special needs child with the opportunity to be as independent as possible and enjoy sports the way their typical peers would. He has been in the league for more than 10 years and looks forward to it every season," a parent in the Challenger League said.
