Shelter in Colorado Springs that helps displaced families shuts down

KRDO

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- After housing hundreds of displaced families throughout Colorado Springs, a shelter on the southwest side of the city is set to shut down.

The New Promise Famly Shelter opened in 2020, helping families with children under the age of 18. However, Saturday, July 30, 2022, will be the last day the shelter doors will close for good. For families currently living there, they'll be forced to leave.

According to officials with the shelter, the families were notified of the closure at the beginning of July. Eight families have already moved out to either different shelters or apartments.

The remaining families have days to find different housing options.

The director of Family Promise of Colorado Springs, the organization running the facility, told KRDO that the closure comes down to one thing - money.

"As everyone has been negatively affected by COVID. We have too. We have seen donations decline. We also experienced a rapid growth since 2020. Now we've hit that kind of space where are donations aren't able to stay up as high as we need them," explained Crystal Karr with Family Promise Colorado Springs.

While the shelter is shutting down, organizers are still doing what they can to assist displaced families across the city.

New Promise Family Shelter is also accepting monetary donations.
