Colorado Springs Police say call volume of fireworks complaints lower

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., (KRDO) -- Despite fireworks being illegal within Colorado Springs city limits, the sky lit up on the Fourth of July.

New numbers from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reveal that 400 people called in firework complaints over the 4th of July weekend.

CSPD says it was far less of an issue this year than previously.

The data they shared shows us the day-by-day breakdown of firework complaint this year.

No surprise-- July 4th saw by far the most fireworks complaints. Bob Tornabene with Colorado Springs Police says the number is far less than last year.

"I think it was in the 490s and the year before nearly 900 and I am sure the pandemic had a lot to do with that. There were no events going on and everybody was cooped up," said Tornabene.

A total of 389 firework complaints came in over the holiday weekend.

" It just may be simply that people were out and about more and attending the actual events that were going on, we did get some rain so they may have tapped out of celebration," added Tornabene.

They say with the staffing shortages going on, they handled the calls accordingly and attended to priority calls such as domestic violence, or robberies first.

"We had people working 24/7 unfortunately with the man power it is very hard to keep extending hours when we are already at most staffing levels as it."

CSPD was not able to provide the number of arrests for fireworks.
