Catholic Charities Marian House receives big donation of peanut butter

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Hundreds of jars of SKIPPY peanut butter will now be used to feed the most vulnerable in the Pikes Peak Region.

On Wednesday morning, Safeway and Hormel donated 500 jars of peanut butter to the Marian House.

"It’s a big donation," said Andy Barton, the CEO for Catholic Charities of Colorado.

Barton says a donation like this helps relieve other pressures for families in need.

"For us what it means is really that we can help families and individuals avoid some of the severe consequences of the struggles of poverty it’s a prevention tool for us," said Barton.

The jars will provide them with a three-month supply of peanut butter. The Marian House says they're continuing to see an increase in the number of people coming in for food.

"We’re up to between 20-25 households a day being served in the marketplace and we could expand those services and are looking to do so as resources allow because that need continues to climb. I think what we’re seeing locally with inflation and some of the other pressures that are just going to continue to grow," said Barton.

With the growing need, having some of the basics can make a big difference for a family.

"Protein is such an important staple in most people's households, peanut butter is a great shelf staple protein option," said Brad Sherwood with Albertson Safeway.
