Sen. Bennet at Schriever Space Force Base discusses Ukraine, cyber security, Space Command
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Senator Michael Bennet took a tour of Schriever Space Force Base Friday, followed by a discussion of the ongoing war in Ukraine, cyber security, and the future of Space Command.
Bennet along with Senator Mark Warner (D-VA.) met with the chair of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, met with leadership from the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Intelligence Community (IC) at Schriever Space Force Base in El Paso County Friday.
After touring the base, the two senators answered questions on the ongoing aggression in Ukraine and Schriever's importance in repelling Russian cyber aggression.
“(Schriever) is the nexus of national intelligence and space warfighting and that’s here in our state it’s here in El Paso County,” Senator Bennet told 13 Investigates. “It is the integration of the intelligence agencies sitting side by side on these floors with Space Force and with Space Command that’s enabling us to be able to have exquisite intelligence we are using to help our allies all over the world.”
“I’ve been surprised that the Russian forces haven’t brought their top A-Team fully into the cyber engagement," said Sen. Warner. I’m surprised the internet is still up or the communications systems are still up.”
Last year, Bennet was joined by Senator Warner in sending a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to look into the decision to move Space Command from Colorado Springs to Huntsville, Ala.
Colorado officials have previously expressed concerns that the decision to move Space Command's headquarters from Colorado Springs was politically motivated by former President Donald Trump.
Bennet said he won't stop working to keep Space Command in El Paso County.
“We’re a lot better off spending money in space, and on the mission than by wasting it by moving somewhere else," said Sen. Bennet. “I do not believe the decision to move space command, to begin with had anything to do with our national security.”
