Fremont County Humane Society asking for Valentine’s Day cards for dog in the shelter for 270 days
CANON CITY, Colo. (KRDO)-- Valentine's Day can be rough if you're alone, which is why the Fremont County Humane Society is asking for Valentine's Day cards for their longest-tenured resident.
Cashew is a six-year-old mastiff/pitbull mix and has spent the last 270 days in the care of the Fremont County Humane Society.
"It breaks our heart to have any animal in the shelter for that long," said Susan Fredinburg, the shelter manager.
On Tuesday, Cashew got to spend some time outside with two of his favorite girls, his foster mom and one of the animal care technicians. You could say he's a ladies' man.
"He loves women, loves women," said Fredinburg.
Fredinburg says they haven't had any interest interest for him, and he can actually be a little timid at first.
"He’s got a great personality once he gets to know you, but again because of his size he can be really intimidating," she said.
While Cashew waits for his forever home, the humane society is hoping the Valentine's Day cards will make him feel loved.
"I know for me personally, it always makes me feel good when I get a card, and I just wanted him to feel loved. I decided to put a post on my personal page asking for 100-plus Valentine's cards because he’s 100-plus pounds, so then it was shared and shared and shared again and now we have an orthopedic bed for his knee, we’ve toys, treats, Valentine's Day cards," said Fredinburg.
Cashew has been spending the last six weeks in foster care while he recovers from knee surgery. He has to have a second surgery before he will be up for adoption again in about eight weeks.
