Pueblo Meals on Wheels running short on drivers

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- Before the Pandemic, Meals on Wheels in Pueblo had around 150 drivers delivering food to the city's elderly all across town. Since then, their numbers have been cut significantly.

As of right now, the charitable organization only has 80 volunteer drivers to deliver essential meals to folks that need them the most.

The staffing shortages have forced drivers to double up on their routes and extend the time it takes for those in need to receive food.

Jane Schifferdecker, who oversees the Meals on Wheels operation in Pueblo, says she needs help badly.

"I need about 70 more drivers. And so please help us out, its an easy job very flexible, and you'll meet nice people and you are doing such a service for these other people. It's a great deal, and I'm proud to be part of it," Schifferdecker says.

Meals on Wheels currently serves 400 Pueblo Residents. According to the Meals on Wheels website, nationwide, one in four seniors lives alone, and 7.4 million seniors have an income level below the poverty line.

Those willing to serve will need a car to make the deliveries with. Each volunteer will receive a 50 cent stipend for every mile that they drive.

"Our drivers go and deliver them a hot meal every day. Plus, they greet them with a smile," Schifferdecker says.

If you have a car and would like to help out, you're asked to call 719-549-8900 and ask for Meals on Wheels.
