1921 vs Now: photos of the Pueblo Flood compared to photos of the city in 2021
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- On June 3, 1921, one of the worst natural disasters in recorded-state history happened in Southern Colorado.
Water from the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek surged into Downtown Pueblo, destroying buildings, taking out bridges, and killing hundreds of people. Historians say the death toll ranges between 200 and 1,000.
Throughout the week of the 100th anniversary of the Pueblo Flood, local leaders honored those who died and remembered how the city recovered and rebuilt after the tragedy. Thursday, a former professor at CSU Pueblo debuted a documentary detailing the experiences of people affected by the monumental flood.
While many of those buildings that were affected have either undergone massive renovations or have been torn down, KRDO took a look around Downtown Pueblo to try to recreate photos taken following the flood in 1921.
