Governor Polis orders all flags half-staff to honor victims of Mother’s Day mass shooting

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- Governor Jared Polis ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff to honor the victims of the Colorado Springs shooting.

Starting now through sunset Tuesday, May 18, flags on all public buildings will be lowered to half-staff.

“The tragic shooting in Colorado Springs is devastating, especially as many of us were spending the day celebrating the women in our lives who have made us the people we are today. Multiple lives were taken by this terrible act of violence. Families torn apart, and at a birthday party no less. My deepest condolences and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone else impacted by this tragedy,” said Governor Jared Polis. 

On Sunday, May 9 - Mother's Day - a man entered a home and shot and killed six people before turning the gun on himself.

All of the victims were members of the same extended family.

The victims were identified as:

  • Melvin Perez, 30
  • Mayra Ibarra de Perez, 33
  • Joana Cruz, 52
  • Jose Gutierrez, 21
  • Sandra Ibarra-Perez, 28
  • Jose Ibarra, 26

A fundraiser to help pay for funeral expenses for the victims has been set up on Facebook.
