El Paso and Pueblo counties see decrease in hospitalizations
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- More than a week after Thanksgiving, Colorado is seeing a statewide decrease in the number of hospitalizations.
According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment since December 1, current hospitalizations and hospital admissions have decreased statewide.
El Paso and Pueblo Counties are seeing the same trend. According to both CDPHE and El Paso County Public Health, El Paso has seen fewer hospitalizations for seven days as of Tuesday.
As for Pueblo County, CDPHE data also shows for the past seven days hospitalizations have decreased.
Dr. Steve Cobb the Chief Medical Officer for the Denver Metro Group and an incident commander for COVID-19 with Centura Health says, "We are seeing this everywhere, it's consistent it's just a very short duration for a trend so it makes us cautiously optimistic."
As to why the trend is happening now, Dr. Cobb says they can only guess. However, he hopes it's because people are taking precautions seriously. "That they refrained from big holiday gatherings at Thanksgiving and so we are not seeing the spike we might see on top of this current surge in the pandemic," Cobb says. "We got another week and a half or so to go before we are really out of the woods on knowing what the impact of Thanksgiving has been."
While all of this is good news, Cobb says it's still not time to celebrate. "While we are excited and our health care workers are excited and optimistic about what this might mean in the overall course of the pandemic it's still too early to be overwhelmingly encouraged," Cobb says.
