FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KRDO) - A new COVID-19 testing site opened up on Tuesday in Fountain, as part of a ramped-up effort to contain the spread of the virus.

The new site is located at Fountain Fire Station #1 at 811 N. Santa Fe Ave. It'll be open Monday through Friday every week, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

El Paso County is also opening two new satellite testing sites.

One in Falcon, at the Rock Island Regional Trailhead at 7281 McLaughlin Road -- open Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And another in Monument, in the Saint Peter's Catholic Church rectory parking lot at 55 Jefferson Street -- open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

County health officials told KRDO Tuesday these additional testing sites are necessary to find out exactly how far the virus has spread.

"Testing is one of the key components of our ability to have a pulse on what’s happening with our cases in our community," said Lisa Powell. "It gives us a better opportunity to quickly make the shifts and changes that we need to in order to ensure that we don’t have this too far out of control."

Meanwhile, the county is still waiting to hear back about a mitigation plan sent to the state health department amid a recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
