EPC Health discusses COVID-19 trend as schools return

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The first schools in El Paso County reopened on August 24, and so far Public Health reported more than 520 cases since then.

Of those, the data shows 164 people have recovered and more than 350 cases remain active.

In the 17 days before, between August 6 - 23, public health reported over 800 cases.

"Over the past two weeks we've had a steady decline in the cases reported each day," said Kimberly Pattison with El Paso County Public Health.

It typically takes about two weeks for a spike to show up in the data and so far it seems numbers of cases this month are lower than they were in August.

"We haven't yet seen an effect from children returning to school," Pattison said.

It could be because most in-person learning is only available to kids in elementary and middle schools.

"Most of our districts started with younger age groups and so we'll be watching what happens as we have our middle school, our high school students returning to in-person learning," she said.
