Early morning fire in Colorado Springs displaces 5 people, kills dog

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- An early morning fire swept through a home in Colorado Springs on Saturday, leaving one dog dead and five people displaced from their home.

Around 6 a.m., the Colorado Springs Fire Department was called to a house fire at the Cantebury Mobile Home Park on Preakness Way on the city's southeast side.

KRDO spoke to the family on Monday and learned Elena Gomez was transported to a local hospital and was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Through a translator, Gomez told us she threw a blanket around her head, and dove under the flames to wake up her daughter-in-law and grand baby. Thankfully the three, as well as Gomez's husband and son, all safely evacuated.

Once they were all out, Gomez said it was too late for their dog, Chico.

"The fire came quick. A neighbor had to hold me back. Like I heard him cry, but I couldn't come back in to save him," she said.

While the CSFD hasn't released details of the fire or how it was started, they do say fires like these should remind people to make sure they have working smoke alarms in your homes, adding "they save lives."
