Colorado Springs firefighters rescue children stranded in river
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Fire Department rescued two children stranded in a river near Chelton and Academy Saturday afternoon.
The department's technical rescue team responded to a call about two children crying for help from rocks in the middle of the river.
A lieutenant with CSFD told KRDO the kids likely went out into the river while the water level was low, but it quickly rose because of afternoon rainstorms.
Rescuers waded through the fast moving water and carried the children back to the shore one at a time.
The two children are unhurt and safely home with their families.
The CSFD Heavy Rescue Team is comprised of 24 firefighters who are highly trained technical rescue experts, according to a tweet from the Colorado Springs Fire Department spokesperson.
The team specializes in 9 disciplines in technical rescue, and swift water rescue is one of team's primary areas of expertise.
