Student at Odyssey Elementary in Colorado Springs tests positive for COVID-19
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs School District 49 confirmed that a student had tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday.
El Paso County Public Health says a student at Odyssey Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19. The individual last visited the school on August 13 and has since been in quarantine, according to officials.
Investigators for the county health department are notifying all those who may have been in contact with the student. The school custodial staff are also doing a deep-cleaning and disinfecting the building.
"We understand this is troubling news," the district said in a statement.
"We are committed to sharing what we’ve learned in a timely manner. OES will continue to operate on our normal, but elevated alert status."
A spokesperson for D49 also confirmed that a staff member for their "BASE49" summer program also tested positive for coronavirus Thursday. The before and after school program would take place at Remington Elementary School, but the staff member was not an employee of the school.
D49 says it has begun notifying close contacts of the individual and will temporarily close the affected portion of the school to disinfect the area.
D49 is encouraging its students and staff to follow health guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus. El Paso County Public Health is still investigating the incident and monitoring the situation.
