COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Gov. Jared Polis announced his plans to extend Colorado's statewide mask mandate, which was set to expire this weekend.

The initial mask mandate went into effect in July in response to a rise in cases in the state. It was set to last for 30 days, but will likely be extended, Polis said Wednesday evening.

The order makes face coverings mandatory in indoor public places and applies to people 10 years old and older.

El Paso County previously cited a study they conducted that showed about 60% of people were wearing masks right before the order went into effect.

El Paso County Deputy Medical Director Dr. Leon Kelly told county commissioners during a meeting increasing the usage of masks could slow the spread of the virus.
