City begins replacing South Cascade Avenue Bridge in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Work began in mid-May to replace the South Cascade Avenue Bridge over Cheyenne Creek, according to a release sent out by the City of Colorado Springs.
South Cascade Avenue between Navajo Street to the newly constructed South Tejon roundabout will be closed to traffic during construction. A city spokesperson said work is expected to be finished sometime this fall.
The bridge was originally built in 1925, and although it’s still structurally sound, the release said it isn’t wide enough to meet today’s traffic demands.
The new bridge is expected to provide a crossing of Cheyenne Creek that will meet traffic needs for the next 100 years.
Once the bridge is done, repaving/overlay work will take place on South Tejon Street (South Cascade Avenue to Motor Way) and South Cascade Avenue (Cheyenne Boulevard at the new roundabout to Brookside Street).
When those projects are done, South Cascade Avenue will reopen as a one-way, southbound-only road.
