Colorado Springs gym protests closure while following COVID-19 guidelines
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- One Colorado Springs gym is making its feelings known -- while still following the law.
While personal trainers can work right now, gyms cannot. Now, Results Fitness Rx is trying to change that.
Staff and members are coming in groups of four or smaller to send a message through a massive 72-hour relay. It started Tuesday afternoon and hasn't stopped since. They're running all through the night and in the hot sun, switching off every hour.
"I did 4 miles and 200 squats in my hour," said gym member Daniel Eckstein. "Nobody cares like this gym cares."
"Family, community, therapy, we hear all of those things," said business manager Nick Chaltry.
Chaltry says public health needs to understand that this isn't a one shoe fits all situation. If a gym can follow COVID-19 guidelines, he thinks they should be allowed to do so and stay open.
"It's a small, local, mom and pop gym… We can control our class sizes, we have a lot of property that we can workout on," he said.
Chaltry says the members are still paying their monthly fees, even though they can't go inside. He said if they don't, they might not have a gym to go back to.
With the financial and physical support they're getting, for now they wait.
"We have head thermometers, we have hand sanitizer, we have disinfectant. We are ready to go, and we can go, if we were just given the go ahead."
They're keeping a live count on their Facebook page and will finish up Friday afternoon.
