Police, firefighters thank health care workers at the start of National Nurses Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — This week is National Nurses Week and National Health Care Week, and UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central is honoring staff with the help of the Colorado Springs police and fire departments.
Police and firefighters lined up at the hospital’s shift change at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, with lights flashing, to greet those coming on for the day and those leaving after the overnight shift.
The hospital’s chief nursing officer Tamera Dunseth Rosenbaum, along with other hospital leaders, greated staff.
“I can’t thank our community enough for their tremendous support during an unprecedented time,” Dunseth Rosenbaum said in a statement.
“Staff were so amazed to see the procession of police and fire. Some waved, some honked their horns and some were crying at the sight of so much support from their community and leaders at Memorial.”
National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, which is Florence Nightingale's birthday. Nightingale was an English statistician and social reformer who is considered the founder of modern nursing.
This year National Nurses Week is underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic as it drains hospital resources across the country and places extra demands on health care workers.
