El Paso County lieutenant dies in traffic crash

lt doug lundstedt

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The El Paso County Sheriff's Office lost a longtime member of its force Tuesday due to an off-duty traffic crash.

The sheriff's office reported Wednesday that Lt. Doug Lundstedt "unexpectedly passed away on May 5, 2020, after being involved in an off-duty traffic crash." He had been with the sheriff's office since 2003 and mostly served with the detention bureau.

Jacqueline Kirby, a spokesperson with the sheriff's office, told KRDO the crash happened outside of the county.

“We express our deepest sympathies to his family," Kirby said. "And we, as his blue family, grieve his loss.”

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says its deputies responded to the accident Monday afternoon on the intersection of Gantts Fort Ave and Emery Drive.

While alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash, investigators say Lundstedt was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Lundstedt is survived by his wife, Michelle, and daughter, Jordan. A donation link is being set up by the Sheriff's Office Foundation; we'll include that link when it's available.

This is the second deputy with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office to pass away in a little over a month. In early April, the sheriff's office reported the death of deputy Jeff Hopkins due to complications with coronavirus.
