Colorado Springs drive-thru ice cream joint sees 2nd busiest day since inception
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- While some businesses are seeing a slow-down amid COVID-19, one family-run ice cream stand is seeing more customers than usual.
BJ's Velvet Freez, located at 1511 N. Union Blvd, in Colorado Springs has been in business since 1954. This past Friday they recorded their second-busiest day in the last 66 years.
Crew member Genavee Fawver says, "Yesterday [May 1] was our busiest day of the year. Second busiest that our bosses had since owning this. Our drive-thru is usually set up like this all the time because people don’t like coming up to walk up because of the COVID-19."
Corey and Sarah Houger are the current owners and operators of the ice cream stand. BJ's has been in the Houger family since 1989, offering shakes, cones and slushies.
People are frequenting the stand because they can practice social distancing safely in their cars. Fawver believes southern Colorado's warm weather last week contributed to it being one of their busiest days.
