Colorado Springs martial arts studio offers free online classes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- These days we're all making adjustments. With people looking to find creative ways to connect with the community, CFMAF Martial Arts and Fitness is stepping up.

They're offering free online martial arts classes from now through the second week of May. If the shutdown lasts through May, then the free classes will continue all month.

"The kids have lost so much of their social environments," said co-owner Heather Costley. "They're away from their schools, they're away from their friends, and we wanted an opportunity for kids to be able to interact in a safe forum with other kids. They get to meet other kids and have a great time learning together.

The program is open to all-ages, and Costley says they're already getting good feedback.

"The kids are loving it. The three and four-year-olds and five and six-year-olds don't really understand what's going on today," Costley said. "They're having a hard time staying at home. 'Why can't I go out?' The kids get excited when I see us on there. We can give them a chance at the end to talk to the teacher and to each other."

CFMAF is known for its workouts and since they're improvising anyway, one workout involves using bags of canned foods as makeshift weights.

"They are using plastic bags and canned goods, things they have at home to be able to do their bicep curls, their triceps extensions, different activities to be able to make that workout happen," Costley said. "They get to alternate. Do I put too many cans in there to make it heavier or lighter? It makes it fun for them."

Costley says that in this time of stress, we need to take care of ourselves as a community.

"A great way to do it is to be able to get online, and not worry about your problems. Just get online and learn how to do a new technique. Learn how to get your fitness in. Take a moment for yourself. It's self care and that's crucial right now."
