Southern Colorado wakes to snow-packed roads

Drivers experienced snow-packed roads and slick conditions Tuesday morning, but there weren't as many crashes as there were during previous snowstorms this fall.

Several parts of El Paso County woke up to heavy snow and high winds, which caused white-out conditions in many parts of Monument.

“I would recommend just go back home and don’t travel,” one driver said.

That same snow made its way to north Colorado Springs, affecting drivers along North Academy Boulevard.

Many chose to brave the winter weather simply because they had to.

“On the south side of town, there wasn’t a lot of snow, but there was a lot of ice pack on the roads. But up here, there is more snow,” said Renee Gonzalez while on her way to work.

One driver we spoke with said he was on his way to Santa Fe from Fort Collins. He said he tried to leave early but was still caught in the storm's path.

“We’re heading down to Santa Fe, I think going to wait until the snow calms down," Grant Smith said.

Too far from home to head back, Smith said he was left with no option but to continue. Though, he says getting back home Tuesday isn't an option.

“Apparently there’s so much snow, nobody is going anywhere my friends that we’re going to the airport aren’t going today because they just can’t even get out of their driveways," he said.

With over 300 miles to go, he chose to stop at a local gas station to get the supplies he needs to get prepared. “Just got some more wiper blades and fluid we’ll be all set,” he said.

While another driver said he's already prepared, but for a different reason.

“I sit up pretty high [in my truck] so it takes a lot of snow to stop me, but I try to stay off the roads because it’s dangerous it here," Chad Carey said.
