Whats next for the Drake Power Plant

On Wednesday, an army of first responders and firefighters arrived to the Drake Power Plant after getting a call about a fire under turbine seven.

It’s a terrifying sight for employees at the plant who remember the 2014 fire at the plant which had been big enough to put a column of smoke in the sky.

The 2014 fire left many customers with high energy bills to help pay for the damage. Customers were concerned that this fire might increase their bills as well.

Rest assured, Steve Berry with Colorado Springs Utilities tells us that’s not going to happen.

Last week, turbine six was down and was supposed to come back online the night the fire broke out.

However, because of supplementary energy already put into effect by the Ray Nixon Power Plant, with both turbines six and seven down, there was no interruption to your power and thus there will be no increase in your bill.

More than anything, the fire may have proven the power plant is more than ready for decommissioning by the year 2035.
