Man charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after dog is strangled
Rowland Trevino from El Paso County has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after admitting to killing his own dog.
A neighbor sent a video to Animal Law Enforcement, in which Trevino confesses to strangling his dog, Koy, and burying him in the backyard.
“It’s picked up a little bit,” said Sgt. Jeffrey Rigney with Animal Law Enforcement. “The cases have been a little more heinous. This one is up there as far as horrendous can go.”
Trevino’s two other dogs, “Diamond” and “Rex”, were transferred for their safety and put up for adoption.
“They should treat their animals as they would their family members, like most of us do. I have two pugs that are my other kids, that’s how I look at them, and there are laws saying that you have to provide certain things for your animals just like you would your kids or your family,” said Sgt. Rigney.
One new law is helping to do just that, banning animal abusers from owning pets for upwards of five years. This law was just signed by Gov. Jared Polis.
