Academy Bank robbery suspect arrested

CSPD has identified the male suspect who allegedly robbed the Academy Bank at 2385 Briargate Boulevard on Friday, August 2 as 19-year-old Avi-Awan Riddle-Doby of Colorado Springs.

Riddle-Doby was taken into custody Tuesday and has been charged with aggravated robbery and first-degree kidnapping, according to a release from CSPD Wednesday.

At approximately 10:10 a.m. on August 2 a male suspect wearing a mask and armed with a silver semi-automatic handgun robbed the Academy Bank on Briargate Boulevard. The suspect confronted the security guard and told her to back off or he would kill her. The suspect then fired a shot as he threw a bag at a teller and demanded cash.

While the teller placed cash from her drawer into the bag, the suspect pointed the gun at a second teller and fired a second shot in her direction. The suspect took the cash, left the bank, and was last seen fleeing southbound on foot. Detectives from the CSDP robbery unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Surveillance operations located Riddle-Doby at a residence in the 1300 block of Shasta Drive. Riddle-Doby was taken into custody without incident for an outstanding Escape warrant. He was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
